What is vaginismus?
Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles that can make penetration (such as during intercourse, tampon use, or a pelvic exam) painful or difficult. It is a common condition and not something you can simply "relax" through. Vaginismus is real, valid, and treatable.

What causes vaginismus?+
Vaginismus involves involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles around the vagina. It may be associated with pelvic floor dysfunction, previous painful experiences, fear of penetration, hormonal changes, or other physical and emotional factors. Sometimes there is no single identifiable cause.
Is vaginismus common?+
Yes. Vaginismus can affect women at different ages and stages of life. It may be underreported because many women feel uncomfortable talking about painful intercourse or difficulty with penetration.
How is vaginismus treated?+
Treatment depends on your symptoms and individual needs. Options may include pelvic floor therapy, vaginal dilators, relaxation techniques, topical treatments, and neurotoxin injections, commonly known as Botox®. At Toxmeup Medical Health, we use Xeomin® as our neurotoxin treatment.
How can neurotoxin help with vaginismus?+
Neurotoxin can be injected into specific overactive pelvic floor muscles to temporarily reduce excessive muscle contraction. This may help the muscles relax and make penetration, pelvic examinations, dilator therapy, or intimacy more comfortable.
At Toxmeup Medical Health, we use Xeomin® for this treatment. Its use for vaginismus is considered off-label, and individual results vary.
Is Xeomin® the same as Botox®?+
Both Xeomin® and Botox® are injectable botulinum toxin type A products that temporarily reduce targeted muscle activity. They are different products and formulations. We use Xeomin® at Toxmeup Medical Health.
How long does treatment take?+
The procedure itself is relatively quick, but your overall treatment plan depends on your individual needs. Neurotoxin does not work immediately, and your provider will discuss what to expect after treatment.
Do I still need pelvic floor therapy?+
Possibly. Neurotoxin treatment does not necessarily replace pelvic floor therapy. For some patients, relaxing overactive muscles may make pelvic floor therapy, vaginal dilators, and other treatments easier to tolerate.
Can I still have a normal sex life?+
Vaginismus is treatable. The goal of treatment is to reduce involuntary muscle tightening and discomfort so intimacy and penetration may become more comfortable. Results vary from person to person.
Is Xeomin® right for everyone?+
No. A consultation and medical evaluation are required. We review your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, medications, and goals to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
your overall health.
Individual results vary. Treatment recommendations are made after a consultation with our provider.
